Free Phone calls?
I was recently reading the Toronto Star and read about this exciting newish program called Skype!
Skype is a program that basically allows users to use their computers as phones. All you do is download the software and install it.
http://www.skype.com/helloagain.html (download the first program, not the beta). Then a window pops up that is very similar to windows messenger or yahoo messenger. You can search for friends that may be on line, but you are best to give your friends or family your user name and ask them to download the program themselves. Why use this instead of messenger? Those programs are great, but I often find it hit or miss on the quality of chats and sometimes the technology of trying to see each other ends up in the way of just having a conversation. I tried this out with my brother in law in Scotland and his voice was as clear as a bell. You can messenger your contact as you would in those other programs or you can "ring" their phone! Really, their computer which will start ringing. I was getting an okay deal with Bell to call the UK for 7 cents a minute, but in their infinite wisdom they've decided to do me a big favour and stop that service and charge me 10 cents a minute. Now I can vote with my phone calls and use this new service for free!
All you need is a microphone (which can be bought fairly cheaply for under ten dollars) and speakers that work. And you are in business.
